Skiing in Osttirol, cross country skiing and skitours in Sillian

Winter Fun ...

On your feet, skier, and off to the thrill-packed slopes

Starting from winter 2000, the 'Thurntaler' mountain ski area offers a new lift to the neighboring Villgraten valley, and the most extensive and modern snow making facilities in East Tyrol. Great skiing is guaranteed on some 45km of pistes up to an altitude of 2400m. Two top-to-bottom ski runs to the villages of Sillian (11km) and Ausservillgraten (8km) are particularly suitable for experts. A 2 to 3 hours' walk takes you up to the Lackfeld Alm mountain hut where you can enjoy regional delicacies before speeding down to the valley on a 7km natural toboggan track.

Other facilities for non-skiers include several regional and one 60km cross-country skiing track, cleared winter hiking trails and the village indoor swimming pool.

Cross-country skiing
East Tyrol has over 400 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails altogether, suitable for beginner and expert, for skater and classical skier alike.

The Dolomitenlauf with its sprint and open marathon is held here each year in January, attracting several hundred top athletes and between 2,000 and 3,000 amateurs from all over the world.

The best starting point for cross-country in the Lienz basin and the picturesque valleys of East Tyrol is the main town of Lienz. It is easy to get from here to your cross-country destination both by car and by public transport.

Trekking adventure on Austria's rooftops
East Tirol which has Hohe Tauern National Park is a paradise for mountain and nature lovers. National Park rangers accompany groups into the kingdom of the ibexes, chamois and the golden eagle – the king of the birds is not seen as often anywhere else in Europe than it is in East Tirol between Großglockner and Großvenediger.
Particularly worthy of note:
The National Park trek between Defereggen- and Virgental valleys.
You can watch the eagle hunting and get a fantastic panoramic view over the 241 three thousand metre mountains in East Tirol. And if you had to put a supersuperlative in front of the many superlatives:
the very best view in the National Park is supposedly on offer at the Zupalsee hut.
